Role Summary:

Providing strategic financial leadership, the Finance Director will, together with the leadership team deliver Above & Beyond’s charitable and strategic objectives. Through the development of robust financial and resource planning, the Finance Director will ensure that Above & Beyond optimises the effectiveness of its people, information technology systems, estates, and finances. The Finance Director’s successful management of their team will create a foundation for the effective use of resources in support of a sustainable and flexible Above & Beyond ready to take on future opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to strategic planning and policy formation within the leadership team
  • Lead and represent the finance and grants team to ensure operational solutions, systems, HR and IT strategies are co-ordinated and optimised to best support the objectives of Above & Beyond
  • Create and maintain a five-year financial plan, ensuring it supports Above & Beyond’s strategic plan, adapting as priorities develop, and presenting to trustees, which:
  • Includes income and expenditure, cashflow forecasts and key performance measures
  • Provides alternative scenarios and accounts for levels of risk, and takes account of reserves policies and investment strategies
  • Ensures strategic planning addresses and balances stakeholder requirements to meet the needs of the receivers of grants, employees, charitable and fulfils public benefit requirements
  • Monitor and report on financial performance and other performance metrics and key results to the chief executive officer, leadership team and trustees advising immediately on challenges and recommending courses of action
  • Carry out investment appraisals and prepare business cases for major projects
  • Ensure Above & Beyond has a strong foundation of financial control policies and procedures
  • Carry out investment appraisals and prepare business cases for major projects
  • To work with the charity’s external advisors on the investment of funds and ensure appropriate compliance and accounting
  • To lead the grant making team and activities, ensuring the charity’s priorities and objectives on grant making are pursued
  • Ensure effective grant making processes are followed, which adhere to charity policies, and that due diligence is thorough
  • Overseeing the preparation of the annual accounts, trustees’ report and advising trustees on the appointment of auditors
  • Acting as the main point of contact with the External Auditors; ensuring that any action plans arising from the audits are completed on time and progress reports prepared as required
  • Work with the head of IT and digital transformation to develop Above & Beyond’s IT strategy to support its strategic objectives
  • Manage a team including finance, IT and grants

About You:

  • Fully qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA/CIPFA)
  • Prior experience of working within a charity – essential (SORP accounting)
  • Have a strong commercial mindset and prior commercial experience (investments, projects, etc)
  • Be passionate about the organisation & what they do
  • Prior leadership & management experience
  • Be strong interpersonally and be able to partner non finance – have the ability to build relationships at all levels
